Vibe Emerging Songwriters’ Camp 2019
July 11, 2019 - July 14, 2019
For the past 15 years, MAV has been producing bespoke, responsive artist development programs for culturally diverse musicians, that have visibly contributed to a contemporary Australian sound.
Building on this work, the Vibe Emerging Songwriters’ Camp is a new intergenerational, intercultural mentoring program to support artistic experimentation and creation of new music by emerging young artists from metro and regional Victoria.
Taking place on 11 – 14 July 2019 at Commonground, the program will see 16 young artists of colour who cover a spectrum of hip hop, rnb, soul and electronic music, undertake a transformative 3 day songwriting residency that will present unique collaborative and creative development opportunities.
Guided by experienced music professionals, Syrene Favero, Nfa Jones, Milan Ring and Spell, participating artists will explore different styles of music and approaches to songwriting and will create and record new music. The residency will be followed by a 1 day music industry pathways crash course and a 1 day production workshop at the Sing Sing Studio at Box Hill Institute.
Produced in partnership with artist development label and mentoring programmer, Creamy Spies, this is one of two new MAV initiatives in 2019 that aim to facilitate new pathways and opportunities for artists, while also contesting the marginality of diverse artistic practice in the Australian music industry.
Project collaborator and curator Syrene Favero of Creamy Spies says, “There is a fervent need to maintain a movement of visibility for people of colour and we do this by addressing the needs of the artists, the community they are raised in, their accessibility to audiences, and industry platforms that support growth of new artist economies. We need more curated artist development programs like this one, to maximise sustainable outcomes, and set defining pathways for artists through quality creative relationships.’’
This project is supported by Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Victoria, APRA|AMCOS, and Commonground.
