Stories Made Music
November 20, 2017 @ 12:00 am - 3:00 amFree
Melbourne, home to the biggest Greek & Italian populations outside of Europe has been a melting pot of world music, attracting musicians from all over the world to practice their art, network and expand on their professional development.
STORIES MADE MUSIC is a hybrid of music, singing and storytelling artists which reflects the cultural heritage of the homelands of immigrants and refugees who disembarked at Port Melbourne Piers. This cultural concert brings together professional Mediterranean Musicologists Con Kalamaras, Salvatore Rossano. French Jewish multidisciplinary artist and storyteller Sylvie Leber.
A contemporary arrangement for Stories Made Music, will be informed by Memory Keepers stories associated with the “What Happened at the Pier” #3 project. Stories Made Music, Con & Salvatore aim to build on the musical tradition of Italian and Greek cultures, and further expand on the identity of Melbourne as a cultural diverse community.
At the core of the overarching program What Happened at the Pier are stories that move across places and cultures, exploring history, identity and, the transformative adjustments immigrants make from displacement to social inclusion.
STORIES MADE MUSIC brings together:
Yurlak has Salvatore Rossano on accordion and guitar and Hayley Egan doing vocals. The duo takes the audience through a musical journey made up of traditional and original songs that talk about migration and voyages- ‘amore’ and loss.
Con Kalamaras and Illias Chaziemmanouil will bring the sound of traditional Greek music to Acland Street. This trio has reconnected with their Greek roots and have collectively delved into Rebetika. They have performed with many notable musicians from Greece. This trio bring their Hellenic influence from Rebetika to regional Cretan and Northern Greece, a true representation of the Greek culture.
Santa Taranta presents Magna Grecia – a musical collaboration between Santa Taranta Italian new folk band & Con Kalamaras playing a fusion of music and folk songs as homage to Magna Grecia where ancient Hellenic civilisation & Roman cultures co-existed for centuries.
Multidisciplinary artist and storyteller Sylvie Leber will reveal poignant and powerful stories of migration so pertinent in the current anti-refugee climate.
Closing event – Murga Madre is a new Melbourne based dance and music ensemble inspired by the Carnival Murga troupes of Buenos Aires. A colorful parade will bring joy and passion to the neighborhood, filling Acland Street with acrobatic dance, the rhythm of the percussions and the sound of their songs. Bring your best running shoes and be prepared to dance Murga with them!
