Shelter Commissions Program 2020

July 13 @ 12:00 am - November 16 @ 11:59 pm

MAV is excited to present the 44 artworks by Victorian culturally diverse artists and artists of colour who have taken part in Shelter 2020.

Shelter is an innovative commissions program developed by MAV to respond to the unique challenges presented by COVID-19 for culturally diverse artists and communities. The first iteration of Shelter has seen the engagement of over 50 diverse artists and artists of colour to produce new works that reflect on the ways we have reimagined and renegotiated our relationships to home and each other during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria.

Shelter is part of MAV’s new strategy, which not only responds to the challenges of this COVID-19 time in amplifying the voices of people of colour, but also expands our understanding of diverse lived experiences as a way of grappling with contemporary perspectives on Victorian multiculturalism, which are at once rich, complex and indefinite.

Shelter Watch Parties

MAV is offering a unique opportunity to hear from, connect and converse with some of the amazing artists who created works for Shelter with a series of watch parties streaming live on MAV’s YouTube, Facebook and Instagram every Thursday at 6pm from October 29 – November 12.

Starting with the The Home Body Connection on October 29, host Candy Bowers will be joined by Jonathan Homsey, Bella Waru, and collaborators Cindy Jiang, Francis Cao and James Emmanuel Mckinnon. The artists will interweave live performance and screening of their Shelter works that provoke discussion around the impact of physical and familial disconnectedness during the COVID-19 pandemic and how our bodies and touch connect us to ourselves, our histories and each other.
More information on THE HOME BODY CONNECTION here.

The second watch party on November 5 will be hosted by Rachel Ang and feature visual art and video works created by Rachel, Mimo Mukii and Marla Celeste, and a live reading by Ruhi Lee. These four artists will explore the theme What is home really? during the COVID-19 pandemic. What is home really as the boundaries between public and private spaces collapse;  how do we experience home and find belonging in a rapidly changing world?
More information on WHAT IS HOME REALLY? here.

On 12 November, the final watch party We, Myself and I will be hosted by Margot Tanjutco and feature a mixed bag of quirky and thought-provoking video and comic works by Margot, Scotty So, Astrid Mendez and Youbi Lee. This group of genre defying, multidisciplinary artists explore, each in their own unique way, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the kinds of transformation that can or even must emerge from this crisis, ranging the deeply personal to the global.
More information on WE, MYSELF AND I here.

Shelter Instagram Artist Takeovers

MAV has invited some of the Shelter artists to take over MAV’s Instagram stories between 22 Oct and 16 Nov.

They will be sharing stories and behind the scenes info about their Shelter works, their artistic practices, being an artist during lockdown and so much more.
