SpontaneiTEA: Pop Up Tea Room series
Monday12 December, 4-8pm
Horse Bazaar, 397 Little Lonsdale
The PopUp Tearoom Series is a durational performance and site-specific installation. Audiences are invited to sit and have a bowl of green tea and the pop-up performances will be happening in spirit of spontaneiTEA of the moment.
Traditionally, tea-ceremony rooms had a small door which visitors bowed to enter, temporarily removing the hierarchies of the world outside. In times of war, Medieval Samurai had to leave their swords outside as the tearoom provided relief from the emotional stress and social disorder of the battlefield. Curious about what sort of ‘Tea’ we can make today, Umiumare invokes the Japanese notion of ‘ma’ or ‘active pause’ to explore deep presence in spaces that can be simultaneously reflective and provocative. One of the central moral values of tea is: 一期一会 (ichi-go ichi-e) and it means, “Treasure every encounter, for it will never recur” “Live every day as though it were last.” This project has been a part of the fellowship program, assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
