Pasifika Festival 2018
November 25, 2018 @ 1:00 am - 6:00 amFree
Now in its 3rd year, Pasifika Festival is a spectacular annual celebration of Pacific Islander arts and culture, dedicated to empowering Pacific Islanders in Shepparton and to sharing culture with the broader community. In 2018, the festival is taking place on 24 November (Sat), 3 PM – 8 PM, down by the water at the Northern Boat Ramp at Victoria Park Lake.
Pasifika Festival is the only event of its kind in regional Victoria that showcases Pacific arts and culture with a free, non-stop celebration of Pacific sounds, flavours and colours for all the family. Come and enjoy music, dance and cultural performances alongside a variety of cultural displays, Pacific arts, workshops and tasty Island foods. The event is free and welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds.
A highlight of this year’s festival will be the Know Your Roots schools showcase. Know Your Roots is a significant cultural development and community arts program for young Pacific people in Shepparton that reconnects young Pacific people with their heritage, empowering them to live their culture proud and strong, and inspiring leadership in the community. Four Know Your Roots cultural performance groups will proudly perform their beautiful culture on the day of the festival representing Tonga, Aotearoa, Samoa and Cook Islands.
The 2018 festival will also see a very special new collaboration take place between Know Your Roots and a Maori cultural group based in Melbourne, Te Karangatahi Waka (TKW). TKW will be coming to Shepparton to teach traditional Maori haka, powhiri and waka rowing to local young Pacific people in preparation for significant and spectacular festival opening and First Nations Ceremony.
Audiences will also be able to enjoy a range of other local performers including Tamaitai Samoa, Poly Proud, Tuaopepe Dance Group, Livingstone Performance Group and more, as well as try their hand at Maori weaving and poi making, browse some colourful Island arts and crafts stalls and even meet the 2018 Miss Samoa Victoria.
The event has been supported by Australia Council for the Arts, OMAC, Gandel Philanthropy, Greater Shepparton City Council, Primary Care Connect.
