A photographic exhibition mapping the evolution of the humble Indian restaurant archetype and the stories behind them. The local Indian food scene is on the cusp of a new wave. It may be claimed that the way to a Melbournian’s heart is through their stomach. Food is also a unique window into a culture. Our taste buds can give us momentarily, an insight, into another way of life thousands of miles away from our own. From the (now ubiquitous) local curry house to fine dining, the Indian diaspora is starting to spread its wings and fashion its own identity through food. With a blend that is uniquely Melbourne – from Indian ‘street-food’ trucks to specialist market stall-holders and contemporary fusion eateries tucked away in CBD laneways. We’re moving beyond paper tablecloths and the same 6 curries on the menu. By moving outside the boundaries of what is traditional, culture can evolve.
